R G Associates is run by Raymond Glew FRICS, a Chartered Building Surveyor and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS).
Practising since 1972, Ray (only ever called Raymond by his wife and mother and when in trouble) was elected a Professional Associate as they were then called in 1974 and a Fellow in 1986. All Chartered Surveyors have to pass examinations and undergo a period of approved training before being allowed to use the Chartered designation.
Ray has spent his entire professional career in private practice and worked for both large and small companies. Recently he spent three years on secondment to a Housing Association client as their main technical support.
In the forty years since starting as a Building Surveyor Ray has worked on many different types of buildings, from refurbishing thirty storey office buildings in the City of London to alterations to manor houses and Ancient Monuments, from children’s wards in hospitals to retirement homes and a mortuary, from hospital kitchens to golf clubhouses.
There was a slight diversion in the early 1980’s when a period as an insurance Loss Adjuster gave experience of diagnosing building failures from a slightly different viewpoint.
In his spare time Ray spends time woodturning (actually making a lot of shavings and dust) and is a motorcyclist. Each year there are a couple of continental trips to race meetings and general touring. A highlight and lifelong ambition was achieved in 2009 when Ray rode in the Himalaya over the highest motorable road in the world (Khardung La 18,380 feet above sea level) on a 1950’s design British motorbike.
Ray also has an energetic border collie which requires regular walks. Over the years the dog (and previous dogs) has taken part in sponsored walks to raise funds to provide equipment for schools in Western Kenya.
